Likes: substitute teaching; solving problems; winning arguments; sarcasm; enormous knit tops; low heels; big collars; lounging on the lanai; and eating cheesecake.

Dislikes: Stanley Zbornak (the bane of my existence); hospitals; Rose’s nonsensical stories about the cradle of idiocy; flying.

Best lines:

“You’ll have to excuse my mother. She suffered a slight stroke a few years ago which rendered her totally annoying.”

“Shut up, Rose!”

“My cupcakes are moist and delicious.”

“Shady Pines, Ma!”

“You’ll always be my sisters …always.”

Most looking forward to: Beating Ma at cards and spending time at Hollingsworth Manor… which means never sharing a bed with Ma, again.

Dislikes: widowhood; sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigots; hats that don’t fit in lockers; Skinny ‘n’ Sweet; anyone who sleeps his or her way to the top; being passed over for promotion; Roz.

Best lines:

“Let’s face it, we are in a pink collar ghetto.  Let’s have another drink.”

“I have never seen anyone leapfrog to the top so fast in my life.  And I have the bad back to prove it.”

“I’m no fool.  I’ve killed the boss.  You think they’re not going to fire me for a thing like that?”

“Thanks, Roz.  I know just where to stick it.”

Most Looking Forward To: A corner office where I will never again utter the words “Violet Newstead, Please Hold.”

We gratefully acknowledge the inspiration of the Fuggers over at gofugyourself in creating our identities.

i discovered your site searching the web for photos and comments about design after dark, which i attended as well. much improved this year i agree. how glad am i to have discovered “down and out in denver”. love your pithy commentaries. i work in the art business and currently run clayton lane fine arts in cherry creek. before that i ran a gallery in lodo which i much preferred as the demographic is more diverse. prior to working as an art consultant i juggled many creative careers including acting, fashion consulting & styling, public relations and special events all the while raising a daughter and many cats. keep me on your radar screen. we need more “guys” like you in our mile high city. and OH! my career minor is bitching about anything and everything. we must compare notes.

Welcome Kathleen! I’m glad you’ve been enjoying our ruminations on all things Denver. Stick around; we’d love to hear more of your thoughts!

Is one of your names Lucian? I think we met last Saturday.

      • Alastair said, on June 9, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Dear Joe, if you’re referring to Lucian (of Samosata), the Syrian writer known for his witty and scoffing nature, then YES.

Kumbaya! It’s not just me….this city IS kind of granola. OK, a lot granola.

I was sitting at a coffee shop, working on my resume (hoping to find my one way ticket outta this town), when I found your blog. Ironically, I had just started typing some emo-esque thoughts on why I can’t wrap my arms around this town. Then, I realized you had pretty much said it all.

I’m like Kathleen – I too like to bitch about everything. Perhaps we should all get together sometime at JR’s. I’ll be the other “weirdo” who is actually trying to talk to other humans in the bar. It’ll be pretty easy to spot me.

    Thanks for validating my feelings.

It’s not just you, Ryan, I promise. And this kind of conversation between like-minded gays was exactly the reason that Alastair and started this little blog in the first place. So glad you joined us!

Maybe we SHOULD think about a little DOD meet-up at some point!

Just have to write and tell you both how delicious your blog is, and that’s coming from a straight, old (38) girl. MSB turned me onto your musings, which I have since frequented. Your writing is adorable and you speak to all things important in the universe, food, PR, and even things green. I have lived and (still) work in your hood and you capture some real gems, even if of the Denver variety. I have even been using your page as an example to all those bad web designers out there. Classy, catchy, simply delightful.

Thanks so much, Spunky T! We love straight girls. And you’d be surprised at how old the DOD boys are (maybe our writing is youthful?). That we can take credit for, but the design was the work of one of Alastair’s best gal pals from waaaay back

Cool site indeed. And sorry for our weather; may I suggest, or require, that during the next wayward storm you rush into Bones for the lobster ramen. You’ll like the storm. You’ll prefer the storm.

    • Blake said, on May 1, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Noted. I’ve had a few other things at Bones, but not the lobster ramen. In fact, I think the last time I was there it was in the middle of one of the first snowstorms of the winter and it did tend to make it seem not so horrible after all.

this blog is too funny, i am quite pleased that i just came across it as i happen to be googling denver food carts. haven’t u 2 tried root down??? let me know if u want to go, i’ll send u some gift cards. muah!

  6. Alastair said, on June 10, 2010 at 10:03 am

DJN, Thanks for the compliment! Blake and I are pleased you found us. I’ve been meaning to write up a little something more re: the food cart movement in Denver. It’s really taking off… and I couldn’t be more pleased.

I’ve also been to Root Down many times… for drinks and dinner, and never one to turn down a gift card. In fact, I had their brunch (the “Classic” Benedict and those amazing potatoes) with some gal pals of mine just this past weekend. And who doesn’t love a bottomless mimosa? Hearts.

DOD boys, does your blog accommodate advice column requests? If so, I need you! So, doing a photo shoot for 5280 and they want me to be “business casual”… I think I know what this means but I realized you are the perfect advisors. I am pretty cute usually but I admit shopping at Ann Taylor (oh it hurts to see it in print) on rare occasions.

With hopes of not completely embarrassing myself, ST

    • Blake said, on July 28, 2010 at 11:56 am

      Spunky,

Apologies for our silence. I am currently without internet access on any sort of regular basis and am currently sitting on a bench outside a public library in the Adirondacks, stealing their wifi.

I’m not sure what to say. A suit seems too much if it’s “casual.” Maybe nice pants and a matching blouse? You can see that when it comes to fashion, the DOD boys are much more knowledgeable about les boys.

And now it has started to rain! Best of luck!

      • Spunky T said, on July 29, 2010 at 9:05 am

Oh your adorableness, trying to answer my trite little request while the Dacks await you. It’s all good. If you need to talk more fashion, you can let us know what a DOD fashion boy sports in the woods? In the rain, no less?

        And thank you, ST

Dear DOD boys, I hope you are having a nice summer, but where are you? The people want you! We need you! Love, the People

    • Blake said, on August 6, 2011 at 6:56 pm

      Spunky, my dear,

Thank you so much for the summer greetings. We do seem to have taken the summer off. It wasn’t planned, and I’m not sure when we’re going to start posting again, but we are flattered to be missed!

I hope YOUR summer has been enjoyable and that you’ve been surviving the heat.

      xoxo

Holy cow! I was researching apartment building names in Denver for a blog post I’m drafting on the topic…and here you’ve beat me to it!

You post foodie reviews…and you’re writing about the Mitford Sisters.

How amazing are you? Apparently, very.

I’ll also hit you up for a coffee meeting. I’d like to take a stab at convincing you Denver isn’t all shambles and sticks…except for when it is.

    • Blake said, on August 29, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Well thank you, Laura. I do feel like we’re becoming better at finding the good in Denver, though I admit that we do have lapses…

And yes, we love the Mitfords!!

  10. Spunky T said, on August 30, 2011 at 1:37 pm

I am glad you took the summer off. I hope it was awesome (past tense, sad face). I do hope you return. Who will fill your shoes? No one. No one will fill your shoes. XOXO ST
