Down and Out in Denver

Sharon Stone

Posted in entertainment, tv, Uncategorized by Blake on May 13, 2010

Ms. Stone has officially risen to the top of the heap amongst searched terms that end up with a click on Down and Out in Denver.  Giving her a run for her money are Sarah Richardson, host of the HGTV show “Sarah’s House,” and Sandra Rinomato of HGTV’s “Property Virgins” (Rinomato is often combined with the words “hate,” “teeth,” or “breasts”); Alastair and I posted on Richardson and Rinomato, respectively.  While we here at DOD think we’re writing a little blog about all things gay and Denver, people arrive here for all sorts of other reasons.  (I was right, by the way: the possibility of Emilio Sosa’s gayness has resulted in a number of hits every day since I posted on his PR win.)

Stone and SVU co-star Mariska Hargitay on set

Those who have blogs of their own will not find this at all surprising as they probably check what WordPress calls a “Dashboard” to see how many hits they have, whether others have linked to them, which links those visitors themselves have clicked, and so forth.  Alastair and I do all those things as well.  But what has surprised me in the last month is just how little I said about Sharon Stone (I mentioned that she was set to become a guest star on “Law and Order: SVU”) and how that has generated more traffic than just about anything else over that month.  And not just in English. Other alphabets have started to grace the DOD Dashboard: شارون استون  and Шэрон Стоун.  Apparently Czechs and Russians are using DOD to learn more about Ms. Stone.  Even just typing in “Stone” gets you to DOD.

My biggest question is this: is there really no better place to find out more on the wonders of la Stone?  I googled Sharon Stone (no quotation marks) and made it through the first ten pages without coming upon lil’ ol’ DOD.  Who has the time to keep going, I ask you.  And why?

Oh, Historiann, I’m not nearly that devious. I was just devoid of anything else to say.

But on to more important matters: OMG INDEED. I’m crying right now. It does seem (from the link) that they might find some way to keep it going, maybe on TNT. A girl can dream… Otherwise I might have to do a whole month of posts on L&O. At least SVU survives and apparently there is a new version set in Los Angeles. What is the world coming to?

Well, I thought the show jumped the shark years ago–and since I loved Lenny Briscoe, it’s been hard to watch since Jerry Orbach died. (Green was OK.) SVU has been DOA for years, too.

That said, they’re all scripted dramas, a disappearing species on network TV. And since they were on NBC 3 or 4 nights a week, I guess that means more shitty “reality” shows and game shows, or 3 or 4 more hours of Jay Leno. Good god. NBC = Nothin’ But Crap. I’d rather watch CBN–their shows are good for more laughs than NBC’s shows (The Office and 30 Rock excepted, only.)

Well, it’ll only be the regular L&O that’s leaving; all the rest remain so NBC won’t be without programming. SVU is also one of their very highest rated shows; the very reasons you don’t like it are probably what keep others coming back for more! I’m still holding out hope that L&O survives. I don’t like the central police partners right now but I will never tire of S. Epatha Merkerson and I’m still on board for the current legal team.

They are also launching a new L&O in LA (codenamed LOLA).

I agree with Historiann, though, that the original jumped the shark a few years ago. Actually, it jumped the shark, circled back around, jumped again, and then fell into the water.

Besides, I never quite got over the departure of Clair. And once the yoda-like DA guy (Adam?) left, it was really over.

I cannot really imagine L&O in Los Angeles so much is NY a character on that show. But stranger things have happened.

I think the sad thing is that pretty much everyone agrees with Historiann on this one — hence the bad ratings. I just find L&O so satisfying that even if I don’t love all of the actors (and I have a long list of my most disliked) I can still watch an episode, at least three times.

        Heh to GayProf’s triple salchow, triple-lutz shark-jumping!

I agree with you Blake about S. Epatha Merkeson’s “LT.” I thought your post a while back about how L & O is a great venue for older actresses was spot on. (But, Marlo Thomas looks like a totally different person now. “Not free to be” her anymore, I guess!)

Ouch. Marlo has indeed abandoned some of her 70s empowerment through gender-neutral individuality. (I was totally raised on “Free to Be You and Me.”) As Oil of Olay once said, she is not growing old gracefully, she is fighting it every step of the way.
